Sri Lankan authorities have agreed to the elimination of 3 million stray dogs. The government has decided to cancel the decision prohibiting the capture and killing their dogs – said Maithripala Sirisena, Minister of Health of Sri Lanka.
In this country, two thousand people are annually hospitalised because of bites inflicted by strays searching for food.
According to authorities, the number of wandering dogs already exceeded 3 million, and has become a serious problem for public health.
The killing of stray dogs ban came into legislation in 2006 under pressure from animal protection organisations that forced a sterilisation programme. This, however, has changed nothing.
The action of sterilisation of female dogs failed due to corruption and mistakes made by authorities responsible for it – say the defenders of animals.
